With Master Obi-Wan’s… situation being what it is, Anakin has been taking on more responsibilities to make up for his absence in the field. His latest deployment is ongoing and no one is expecting to see him in the Temple in quite some time. Under any other circumstances, Ahsoka would be out there with him, but he’d decided to have her stay with Master Obi-wan, as a sort of liaison to make sure he doesn’t get into any more trouble than he can handle at this age. At least, that’s what he told her.
(Ahsoka’s heard some of the other Knights saying it’s for the best that Master Skywalker is gone, but personally, she wishes he’d stayed. It was obvious that Anakin thought it was hilarious, and watching a young, indignant version of her grand-master struggle to stay prim and proper under the circumstances would have been better than the highest-rated Holonet drama out there.)
As it stands, Master Obi-Wan has been handling it well enough after Anakin’s departure, though he’s been absolutely swamped with younglings. Even they know some of the stories of the legendary Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, and though he was both inspiring and intimidating before, now he’s on their level. He’s much more real to them as a gangly teenager who looks uncomfortable in his own skin than as the inscrutable star of the Jedi Order, and it’s hard to suppress a giggle when a young Wookie decides to use him as a tree.
Although she’d love to keep watching the show for as long as it lasts, Ahsoka knows Master Obi-Wan can handle himself even with the younglings, and besides, she has other duties to attend to. During one of his brief stays in the Temple, Master Plo has decided to take up the teaching duties she would supposedly be lacking without either of her Masters readily available, and on this day, she’s been given the chance to prove her skills in Jar’Kai, so they’ve been looking for a free place in the training salles between meals, classes, and Council business. By the time they find one and have the time to spare, Master Plo is called away for an emergency, but he leaves Ahsoka with a number of training remotes and instructions to keep practicing, to remember her defenses before she charges recklessly into battle like her Master, and a simple reminder to focus and trust in the Force. She accepts the advice with a smile and a short bow as he takes his leave, and turns her attention to the remotes, lightsabers activated, giving the signal to fire when ready.
It was funny, for all of his mastery of Soresu, Ataru was the stronger memory in this form. Less however when he remembered why. An unconscious scowl formed, the next motion soured with a misstep, the first in what could only have been years. Aggressive meditating only worked so well when your emotions keep coming back to haunt you.
Starting again, it doesn’t take the familiar repetitive motions long to sooth old hurts, choppy moves becoming smooth once again. With each repetition, old meditation techniques long unnecessary analyze and release the swarm of emotions flooding his being. By the end of it he’s found his center once more, the balance retained much more fitting to the master he’s become than padawan he resembles.
Staring distantly at his unlit lightsaber a small part of him wishes for the company of his own former padawan. As much as Obi-Wan isn't inclined for his colorful commentary of the entire situation, there are much more important things Anakin needs to attend to than the whims of his old master. Especially in the midst of a war. The battles have not stopped while he has been on Coruscant and only grow worst by the day. Still, his companionship would have been a welcome balm in while trapped in their home more empty than not.
Ahsoka however, was a welcome alternative. Even if he is all too aware of the vast amusement coming from her direction when the initiates swarm. He’s not the most pleased with someones decision to have her stay close in case he decides against staying any longer but he cannot rebuke her presence helping against him climbing the spires in outright annoyance of the situation.
Finished for the day, he seeks her Force signature intent of inviting her for a meal only stopping when he notices her training. Ahsoka’s improved greatly in the months he’s watched her progress, the sheer amount of battle all of them have seen advancing her incredibly ahead of schedule. There’s still plenty of room for improvement he notes however, noticing a move he only knows one other to do. Unlike most people, at least she doesn’t allow it to strike her head on. “You’ve left your side open again.” He calls when the remote comes to a stop.
Experience on the battlefield, however limited compared to her masters, has taught Ahsoka that focusing entirely on what’s in front of her is not the way to win a battle, but in less dire circumstances, that lesson may sometime proves difficult to remember. In the training salles, knowing that she is in no danger even from surprise attacks, she directs her focus on the training remotes, letting the world around her fade with only the Force to warn her if something changes. She goes through the kata, using this time as an opportunity to merge some of the newer forms of Djem So that Master Anakin has been teaching her with the reverse grip she favors.
As the training session comes to an end, Ahsoka allows the real world to come back into focus as she catches her breath. Her fighting style, though very different from her master’s, has taken on enough of Anakin’s aggressiveness that it can be exhausting when she pushes herself like today. And given how often the three of them are on the battlefield together, Obi-Wan’s criticism should not be unexpected after a round like that - but somehow, he catches Ahsoka off-guard. In her determination to integrate and perfect the training both he and Anakin have been giving her, she’s forgotten to take note of any spectators.
“I thought I did okay,” she admits after a moment, inclining her head to acknowledge his expertise. She may have thought she was fine, but he must know best. “What would you think I should do about it, Master Obi-Wan?”
“Be mindful of your surroundings.” There’s a minor quirk of the brow at the statement, as he pushes off the doorframe and entering the salle proper. “The Force is your ally but even so, some day you could find yourself without it.” It’s a rare happening but in the midst of war, he’d rather know she could defend herself completely without the Force compensating for a weak spot. “Your stance should sweep fuller, allowing your moment to protect that area in an attack.”
It’s odd he has to say, teaching when he feels like he should still be the one taught. Obi-Wan can only imagine what his own Master would have said, hearing such a statement. Definitely something akin to the fact that they never stop learning even if they’ve lost the braid. And yet, there’s still that difference in feeling as he stands here, awkward in his own skin once again.
Quietly, he admits it doesn’t help that Ahsoka has currently become the taller one of them.
“Are you done for the day?” It’s a bit abrupt after that but he had come here with a purpose. His former state seemed to have come equip with his former appetite and his stomach reminds him right then, quite loudly in no uncertain terms, he could very well eat an entire Bantha right now.
“I’ll keep that in mind.” She represses the urge to shudder, the very idea sending a thread of disquiet through her mind. “But how could you just suddenly not be connected to the Force? You haven’t lost it, have you, Master?”
It’s a horrifying thought. Sure, there are plenty of people throughout the galaxy who can’t sense the Force, but for a Jedi to be cut off from it… Ahsoka has never heard of such a thing, and she hopes with all her heart that it can’t be true. Taking a moment to close her eyes and breathe, she relishes her own connection to the Force, its presence comforting as she notes the buzz of the Temple, everyone going about their business as if nothing has changed. Regardless of his physical size, Master Obi-wan would know. He did, after all, teach her own master.
She smiles when her eyes open again, nodding. “Yep. Master Plo was called away for something, so that’s all I had planned for today. What about you? How did you escape the younglings?”
"There are methods." Distantly, he notes how he's managed to sound perfectly detached but his mind is on Rattatak. For all that he’s seen over his life, it’s one place he would be glad to never revisit.”They're rare and more tall tales than reality but they do exist." He blinks, purging the swell of emotions that came with the memory before smiling reassuringly at Ahsoka. "But no, I have not."
Not at the moment at least. For now everything outside his unexplainable change seems to be in working order. Even Anakin, off in the middle of doing only Force knew what wasn’t encroaching chaos on the edge of his senses.
“It was a matter of persistence and skill.” Is Obi-Wan’s dry reply, a wry twist of the lips forming. (They had been called away by the creche master and he escaped while they hadn’t been looking. How it helps to still have a Force Presence of a Master when his hood is up.) The whereabouts of Master Plo however only causes the twist to tighten, a flicker of displeasure quickly forming and releasing. He’s sure he’ll hear of it later- although thinking of it he’s still not sure how. With him temporarily in this form, he’s seceded his seat on the Council. Not by choice but putting up a fight about it would have been a waste of effort. After all, you could not hold a Council position as a padawan by any means.
He’s sure this only means he’s in the dark until they plan to inform him of any changes. What a wonderful thing to realize. “I had been on my way to find something to eat.” He says, pushing such thoughts aside. He’ll take the break for what it is, given the circumstances. “And I was wondering if you would like to join me.”
“They never mentioned that in our classes,” she says, not opposing him, but wondering why something that important would have never come up. Given the ongoing war with the Separatists, Ahsoka would have thought that should be valuable information for anyone going out in the field. The plan never included getting captured, but as the Masters loved to say, they must be prepared for anything. There were too many factors in a war that could not be controlled or even predicted.
Letting out a sigh of relief at Obi-Wan’s answer, she comments, “Good. I don’t think I’d want to know what that feels like.”
Though she is tempted to ask more about it, Ahsoka is nevertheless grateful for the change is subject. Later, she decides, she can pay a visit to the library and do some research of her own. There’s no way the Jedi wouldn’t have something on the subject, if only to be prepared in case it ever happens to one of their own. There has to be something.
“Of course,” she answers with a smile as she starts for the door, suddenly aware of how hungry she is, as well. Fighting in the war does a lot to ruin her appetite, but she’s always found herself starving after a particularly intense session, and today is no different. “We should probably get something before the younglings swarm you again. I had no idea you were so popular.”
“There are those who are inclined to believe they do not exist.” A lack of evidence for one makes it hard to back up to those who rarely ventured far from the temple. Even now in the midst of war were they disinclined to not believe the more fanciful possibilities from planets far beyond the outer rims.
And yet despite having seen (experienced) them for himself, Obi-Wan had not wanted anything Sith brought to the temple, holocrons included. But it's without a doubt that even with Madam Nu's disapproval the archives hold everything he's discovered. There was no way he would keep such knowledge to himself now with Sith once again out in the galaxy. Never does he want to find another Jedi in a position like he had been in without any idea of the danger of his position.
"I wouldn't recommend it, I found the experience quite lacking."
Which is definitely one way to describe it. Obi-Wan hides a smile at Ahsoka's back as they exit the salle, although it quickly devolves into a grimace at the reminder. "I can only assume my current situation is absolutely fascinating to the younglings," He says wryly. "And be grateful the Creche Masters allow my escape when I can extract myself."
“Of course there are,” she sighs. It isn’t her place to judge the Masters, of course, but Ahsoka wholeheartedly believes it. With the current situation and the chaos it’s been causing for some parts of the Order, there isn’t much reason not to. The Jedi can’t know everything. That they don’t even know how to change Obi-Wan back yet is proof.
At least the lack of a cure hasn’t dampened his sense of humor. She smiles at him over her shoulder, eyes sparkling with amusement.
“I think it’s cute that they like you so much, Master,” Ahsoka comments, suppressing a laugh behind her hand. “They always liked you, but I think you’re a little less intimidating now that you’re closer to their level. And there aren’t any rules telling them not to climb on an apprentice’s back like there are for masters.”
Glancing back ahead, she continues, “It’s too bad Skyguy isn’t here to see it.”
“The braid is the least imitating of any look.” Obi-Wan sighs, only partially for show. He doesn’t mind it too much, honestly. There’s something soothing about the enthusiasm of the younglings during the midst of nothing but war. Tucked away from the majority of the brutality, their innocence is a balm to the sight of endless battle. “I can only appreciate having the energy to once again keep up.”
It’s only luck he manages to school his expression from the absolute exasperation he wants to express. “Anakin is undoubtedly enjoying the experience even via comm. I’ve never seen him so diligent on reporting in all of our years.”
His former padawans inability to keep his feelings out of his expression only adds insult to injury and his own see-sawing grip on his emotions barely helps. With both it’s most certainly Mace’s doing that kept him off the chair and the two of them separate while whatever was affecting him ran its course. “I have no doubt believing he will find a way back before this is over.”
Oh, he may pretend he doesn’t like it, but Ahsoka has seen how he acts with Anakin, and it’s not much different. It’s all an act, all for show, and though she doesn’t quite understand why Obi-Wan feels the need to do it, at least she can get a laugh out of it when he’s not looking.
“You say that like you don’t have the energy to take down a dozen clankers in one go. And that’s on a bad day,” she comments, shaking her head with a good-natured roll of her eyes. And even that is nothing compared to when Obi-Wan and Anakin get to sparring. The younglings practically idolize them both! “I think Anakin’s just glad he’s not the one in trouble for once. He wants to enjoy it while it lasts.”
It’s actually quite fun to see how excited her master is over this whole thing. None of them understand what exactly is going on, but Anakin is probably the least interested in figuring that out, just because he finds the situation so hilarious. Though Ahsoka has the feeling he wouldn’t be in such a good mood if he was the one waking up mysteriously younger.
“Even at my worst i would rather face a battalion of droids than a creche full of younglings.” Just keeping up with just one enthusiastic child had been quite the experience compared to weeks of non-stop battles. “And I’m sure Anakin will take great pleasure in reminding me once this is over.”
He would for that record, take a week of babysitting the creche than Anakin reminding him of anything he missed while lightyears away. He feels younger, as odd as the statement is currently. It’s only a matter of time until he acts his physical age - a time he would rather keep tucked away in the past where it belongs. Undoubtedly a slip of that sort would call to Anakin’s attention, neck deep in droid parts or not.
It’s only practice that keeps that sigh internal, resignation swirling within the Force.
“You don’t really mean that.” The younglings are a force to be reckoned with all on their own, with all that extra energy that comes with childhood, but they mean well. And they’re arguably as excited about Obi-Wan’s situation as Anakin. “They love you! And you could teach them more, now that they’re not so intimidated by you.”
Ahsoka laughs. “The way you guys hoard information like this about each other, Skyguy is never going to forget it. Though I think he’d have a lot more fun if he could blame it on something you did wrong.” She gives Obi-Wan a sideways glance, wry amusement sparkling in her eyes. “I swear, if I didn’t know both of you, I’d think you hate each other.”
“Perhaps a class or two in the training salles then.” Is the amendment, yet still the young are much more preferable. “The little ones are much more excited that I look like one of them now.” After all, with everyone else gone another new face who visits constantly means a new playmate to them.
“He takes great pleasure in reminding me Master Kenobi is fallible as any being.” The eyeroll in his tone is palpable, a hint of teenaged exasperation in his otherwise serene appearance. “Only because I consistently remind him that he too has faults.” Honestly, he’s more worried of what trails of destruction Anakin would leave in his wake without the nagging to remind him.
In the meantime however, he eyes Ahsoka sternly. For their relatively short time together, she has already picked up far too many of his behaviors. “Hate is far too strong of a word for words exchanged between friends.” He mock lectures, pulling himself to full height. “We only verbally disagree with each others methods.”
Ahsoka beams at him, pleased as can be for even a small allowance like this. It’s more than she expected to get out of Obi-Wan, with him so intent on avoiding the little ones and getting back to normal as quickly as possible. “I’m sure they’ll love it! It’s not often they get to train with a Master their own size. They might even underestimate you,” she says teasingly, with a little extra bounce in her step. Mental note: be there when he trains with them. It ought to make for a good show.
“And because it’s not him, for once,” she laughs. “I think he’s so used to being the one in situations like this that he wants to enjoy the one time it isn’t. Besides, you’d probably be doing the same if it were his problem. It’s all part of that ‘verbal disagreeing’ you guys do.”
Don’t pretend you wouldn’t, Obi-Wan. Ahsoka has been on plenty of missions with the both of you to know the truth. She raises an eyebrow, as if daring him to say otherwise.
“Speaking of, have they made any progress on figuring out what happened? Last I heard, they’d started digging in the restricted parts of the archives.”
