(To be honest, he'd been a little nervous when he'd arrived. There was that excited nervousness that came from the adventure of it all. There was a new world in a far away place and a chance to see a familiar face he'd been missing for so long. Why wouldn't he be a little nervous in that good, excited and eager sort of way?
... But there'd also been that nagging thought in the back of his mind, that familiar ache in his heart: People will hate you. Even if he says he doesn't care and that he can carry on as he always has, he can never completely deny the anxiety that came with being in a new place.
Not everyone will, he'd told himself. He would know Ochako and like her, he would trust her friends. She'd always spoken so positively of them. Surely they'd be fine.
When he arrives in Ochako's world, it isn't as jarring as one would expect for a Ye Olde Fantasy. He could thank the Realm for that. Honestly, after seeing a space station and everything? He could handle any setting. He actually isn't wearing his uniform when he arrives. Instead, he's wearing something a little more appropriate (sans sword) which probably makes him look like he goes to some fancy private school in the city instead... except no one had ever seen that exact uniform before. Could it be from out of town? Hmm.
Well, he'd said he was from out of town but never said where, exactly. Just that he was here to see Ochako which had made her friends riot and slam her with questions. His smile had gone from pleasant and confident to amused but a little apologetic at that. Sorry. He didn't mean to cause her trouble, haha.
It doesn't take much to adjust and look like he really fits in. Just toss a borrowed hoodie or something over him and it's all fine. Appearance wise, he's definitely not Japanese but in his universe? Being foreign was hardly the strangest thing in the world given some of these Quirks.
At the cafe, he accepts his cup and takes a sip before putting one sugar in,)
Don't worry about it. (He can't help but smile just thinking about their reactions,) They seem like a fun group.
(He takes a sip and smiles behind it-- small, quiet, but some how more genuine than any of his brighter than most of his more well known smiles. He feels a little warmer and it shows in his eyes. Maybe it's the tea. Or the company.)
I didn't think it would really work. (The PHS. It had been an idle thought he'd had after being home for some time. What if this didn't actually work and he was waiting all of this time for no reason? He's a naturally curious person and only believes in real evidence so it wasn't a surprise that he'd actually give it a try.) I'm glad it did, though. It's good to see you too.
(Truly. Setting his cup down, he props his elbow on the table, resting his chin on his palm and that smile goes from warm and genuine to
[ claude can have a UA hoodie that she never wears if he wants it. it's not her color? it's just black? boring. ]
They are. [ there's a warmth in her own smile, a fondness in her voice. ochako loves her class, and it shows. ] Everyone's been in a good mood with exams being done and the holidays coming up, too. Being back here with them... it's nice.
I would've told you if it didn't work, though.
[ no need to elaborate on that if claude doesn't ask. it's not something she wants to dwell on, so instead she focuses on the positives, and right now that's would be the genuine smile claude wears, one that suits him far better than the ones he usually flashes around. does that mean he's comfortable enough with himself and with ochako to be honest, for once? thinking too much about that would be dangerous, but she can't stop herself from hoping to see more of this version of claude, instead of the persona he always puts forward.
...and then he turns the charm back on, and listen, she's a teenaged girl with a crush and she's weak. there's no good place to run when they're in public, either, so ochako just kind of sinks into the chair and tries to use her cup to hide the blush warming her cheeks. it doesn't work nearly as well as she'd hoped. ]
